Why there is no single CGPA to percentage formula
A CGPA (cumulative grade point average) is a credit-weighted average of grade points, while a percentage is marks obtained divided by maximum marks. The two are related but not identical, because each grade covers a range of marks. That is why every board and university publishes its own conversion rule, and why the same CGPA of 8.2 can become anything from about 73% to 82% depending on where you studied. Employers, foreign universities and government forms usually want the figure calculated by your university's rule, so choose it carefully in the calculator above.
University-wise formulas
| University / board | Formula | CGPA 8.2 → |
|---|---|---|
| CBSE Class 10 | CGPA × 9.5 | 77.9% |
| Anna University | CGPA × 10 | 82% |
| VTU, AKTU, MAKAUT | (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 | 74.5% |
| JNTUH | (CGPA − 0.5) × 10 | 77% |
| SPPU (grade A band) | 10 × CGPA − 7.5 | 74.5% |
| Mumbai Univ engineering | 7.4 × CGPI + 12, round up | 73% |
CBSE: the 9.5 multiplier came from CBSE's old Class 10 CCE scheme, where 9.5 was the average percentage of students who scored grade A1 divided by 10. CBSE stopped awarding CGPA in 2017 and now issues marks, so the formula is only for older mark sheets. VTU, AKTU and MAKAUT commonly use (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. JNTUH uses (CGPA − 0.5) × 10. Anna University simply multiplies by 10.
SPPU (Pune University) grade bands
Savitribai Phule Pune University's Circular 332 of 2020 sets a different equation for each final grade under the CBCS pattern: O grade 20 × CGPA − 100, A+ 12 × CGPA − 25, A 10 × CGPA − 7.5, B+ 5 × CGPA + 26.25, B and C 10 × CGPA − 2.5, and D 6.6 × CGPA + 13.6. The calculator picks the band from the CGPA using the points where these equations meet (9.5, 8.25, 6.75, 5.75 and 4.75). Check that the grade printed on your grade card matches.
Mumbai University: what changed in 2026
For engineering (B.E./B.Tech) Mumbai University's transcripts use 7.1 × CGPI + 12 when the CGPI is below 7 and 7.4 × CGPI + 12 at 7 or above, rounded up to the next whole number. For Arts, Science, Commerce and Management, a circular dated 1 January 2026 repealed the older formula-based conversions (such as 7.25 × CGPI + 11) and moved to percentages calculated from actual marks by your college. The "pre-2026" option is kept for checking older certificates; for official use today, ask your college for a conversion certificate.
How to calculate CGPA from SGPA
Your SGPA (semester grade point average) is the average for one semester. To get the CGPA across semesters, multiply each SGPA by the credits of that semester, add the results and divide by total credits. If every semester has the same credits, a simple average works. Example: SGPAs of 8.1, 7.6, 8.4 and 8.9 with credits 22, 20, 24 and 22 give (178.2 + 152 + 201.6 + 195.8) ÷ 88 = 8.27. The second calculator above does this; leave credits empty for a simple average.
Worked examples
- CBSE CGPA 9.4 → 9.4 × 9.5 = 89.3%.
- VTU CGPA 7.5 → (7.5 − 0.75) × 10 = 67.5%.
- JNTUH CGPA 6.8 → (6.8 − 0.5) × 10 = 63%.
- Mumbai engineering CGPI 6.5 → 7.1 × 6.5 + 12 = 58.15 → rounded up to 59%.
Using your percentage on applications
Many job portals and exam forms ask for a percentage with a minimum cut-off, such as 60% for campus placements or 55% for postgraduate admissions. If you are close to a cut-off, rely on the official conversion certificate rather than an online calculator, and mention both the CGPA and the converted percentage. Foreign universities often prefer the original CGPA with the grading scale explained, or an evaluation from a credential service.
Grade points behind the CGPA
Most Indian universities use a 10-point letter scale. A common pattern is O (outstanding) = 10, A+ = 9, A = 8, B+ = 7, B = 6, C = 5 and P (pass) = 4, with F or fail at 0, although the exact marks range for each grade differs between institutions and even between regulations of the same university. Your SGPA for a semester is the sum of (grade points × course credits) divided by total credits. Because a high-credit lab or core subject counts more than a one-credit elective, two students with the same number of A grades can end up with different SGPAs.
Common mistakes when converting
- Using the wrong university's formula. A VTU student who multiplies by 9.5 overstates the percentage by several points.
- Averaging SGPAs without credits when semesters have very different credit loads.
- Rounding too early. Keep two decimal places until the final step, then follow your university's rounding rule (Mumbai rounds up).
- Mixing schemes. If your degree moved from one regulation to another, the conversion rule may be different for each part.
Rules change and colleges sometimes use their own scheme, so always confirm with your university's latest circular. Building a study PC? See budget laptop and desktop prices on Gaming PC Price.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert CBSE CGPA to percentage?
Multiply the CGPA by 9.5. For example 8.6 × 9.5 = 81.7%.
What is the VTU CGPA to percentage formula?
Percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. A CGPA of 8 gives 72.5%.
What is the AKTU CGPA to percentage formula?
AKTU B.Tech commonly uses (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, the same as VTU.
What is the Mumbai University CGPI to percentage formula?
Engineering uses 7.1 × CGPI + 12 below 7 and 7.4 × CGPI + 12 at 7 or above, rounded up. Other faculties moved to actual-marks conversion from 1 January 2026.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA?
Multiply each SGPA by its semester credits, add them and divide by total credits; with equal credits take a simple average.
What is 9 CGPA in percentage?
CBSE: 85.5%. Anna University: 90%. VTU/AKTU: 82.5%. JNTUH: 85%.
Is the online conversion official?
No. Use it as an estimate and get a conversion certificate from your university or college for official use.
